Young Workers Home Services

About

Young Workers Home Services was started by me, Jeremy Grattan. With a son having graduated and turning 18 in the same summer, he was not sure what he wanted to do for a career or education. He's not an academic. He does well in school when he's genuinely interested, but when he's not it really shows — many missed assignments and low-effort work. He needs to be interested to do well, so just pushing him into university or college would potentially be a waste of time and money.

This sounds a lot like me at his age.

I went into accounting at university and did not complete my degree. I was never interested in it. I was just picking from a list. My main deciding factor was that with accounting I could work in a wide variety of industries — if I didn't like something, I could move. It turns out it's all just accounting, and I was never really motivated by it.

In my years of work I explored sales and found I was pretty good at it. In fact, I found it really helped with some stereotypical accountant traits I had — shyness and being introverted. I still have these traits to some degree, but I can step up and sell or speak publicly with little hesitation now. It was well worth doing for that alone.

Considering this, I didn't want to push my son into something. What I wanted was for him to discover something he'd genuinely like. I'd like him to learn some skills and be more independent. But how can that be done? Our world says he should go to university or a trade school. He's supposed to just know what he wants to do, or find it on the way. I wanted to find a path of exploration and experiences for him. (Really, what I'd have wanted at his age.)

I'd always thought he'd be good at sales and he'd benefit the way I did. (My sales adventure didn't come until I was 28 years old — I wish I'd done it younger.) I was exploring options with sales that could lead to other work experiences and came up with Young Workers Home Services. The plan struck a balance between providing value through paid jobs/sales for local businesses, and trading that for income and work experience for Young Workers interested in walking this path. In general, the Deal Packs cover regular pay for our Sellers and any referral fees earn them bonuses. We feature and prefer businesses that also hire our Team Members for temporary jobs (work experience). This brings it all together.

My son, Solomon, is actively involved in this business and has helped me in many aspects of it. He is utilizing it differently than I imagined, but many Young Workers are working with us in exactly the manner intended and seeing benefits.

If you've participated with us in any way — thank you.
